Simulations of internal-wave breaking and wave-packet propagation in the thermocline

چکیده
An investigation into density and velocity fluctuations in the oceanic thermocline is presented. Two kinds of numerical simulation are reported. In the first, an attempt is made to capture the transition from breaking internal waves to the small-scale turbulence they generate. The model used for this is based on a continual forcing of a large-scale standing internal-wave. Evidence is presented for a transition in the energy spectra from the anisotropic k buoyancy range to the small-scale k isotropic inertial range. Density structures that form during wave breaking are analyzed and regions of mixing associated with the breaking events are visualized. In the second kind of simulation, internal-wave packets are followed as they propagate through the thermocline. It is found that the breaking of crests within the packet can lead to overturning events on the scale observed in the ocean, and the subsequent turbulence can form a continuous wake.

Propagation of internal wave packets in the thermocline
Internal wave packets propagating vertically in the oceanic thermocline are investigated with numerical simulations. For a typical set of environmental and packet parameters, it is shown that linear dispersion will have a significant effect on the spreading and decay in amplitude of these packets. Sufficiently strong packets are shown to generate turbulence that forms a continuous ‘scar’ of sma...

Steep, short-crested waves, as well as a large variety of three-dimensional propagating wave patterns have been created in laboratory, utilizing a plunging half-cone. Monochromatic waves, over a range of frequencies and amplitudes through breaking and including soliton wave groups near resonance, have been observed and studied in a small wave flume. This monochromatic wavemaker creates complex ...

In this paper a space-averaged Navier–Stokes approach was deployed to simulate the wave propagation over coastal structures. The developed model is based on the smoothed particle hydrodynamic (SPH) method which is a pure Lagrangian approach and can handle large deformations of the free surface with high accuracy. In this study, the large eddy simulation (LES) turbulent model was coupled with th...
